What's On Scotland 22-29 May: Jonathan Baldock at Jupiter Artland & more
There's a new Jupiter Artland exhibition in town, as Jonathan Baldock fills the park's exhibition spaces with a queer zoo. Elsewhere, Hudson Mohawke plays The Art School and First Date festival continues in Edinburgh
Spring always means the reopening of gorgeous Edinburgh-adjacent sculpture park Jupiter Artland and the launch of their summer exhibition programme. This year they're welcoming artist Jonathan Baldock, whose new exhibition WYRD is a veritable zoo of hybrid animals formed from textile and clay, drawing on animals who exhibit same-sex sexual impulses – penguins, giraffes, crabs and elephants – who mutate into mythic harpies, mermaids and phoenixes.
There's also, in case that wasn't enough, another little Baldock exhibition at Jupiter called Warm Inside, in which life-sized cocoons protect bodies on the brink of metamorphosis. Together, the two exhibitions explore ideas of hybridity, queerness, and transformation. WYRD is on until 28 September, and Warm Inside until 27 July.
