What's On Scotland 2-9 Mar: IWD

Have a toast to womankind with International Women's Day, load up on soundsystem at Wee Dub, tickle yo' ribs at Glasgow Comedy Fest and get dressed up for Mardi Gras

Women. Worth celebrating, right? Correct. Well, It's International Women's Day on 8 Mar and there's a whole loada lady-praising to be done. 

Edinburgh Uni project Dangerous Women will throw a closing party at the Scottish Storytelling Centre to celebrate publishing 365 essays this year. It'll be hosted by Jenny Lindsay, with contributions from  writer, poet and creative practitioner Nadine Aisha, comedian Gemma Flynn and Professor Fiona Mackay. 

Filmhouse are also marking the occasion with a screening of Camerapersona moving visual memoir by documentary cinematographer Kirsten Johnson. Over in Glasgow, head to Mono for all-female line-up of poets, artists and musicians including Rebecca Vasmant, Cat Hepburn and Michelle Cohen, with all profits going to Glasgow Women's Aid. Get down and have a toast to womankind.

Kapital: Max Cooper’s Emergence
The Caves, Edinburgh, 3 March, 11pm
Max Cooper returns this week for an audio-visual performance of his new album Emergence. Known for distinctive, emotive techno productions, he's spent the better part of the last decade crystallising his complex, melodic sound. Emergence is accompanied by visuals by animator Nick Cobby, mathematician Dugan Hammock and visual artist Andy Lomas.

Gin Festival
The Briggait, Glasgow, 3-5 Mar, times vary
Keep March ticking over nicely with a glass of the mother's ruin (or two (or five)) at the UK's largest gin festival (entitled, er, Gin Festival) as it passes through Glasgow. There'll be over 100 gins, some of them you're guaranteed not to have tried yet, and all kinds of masterclasses, tastings and talks. Clinketty clink.

Glaswegian Record Fair
The Old Hairdresser's, Glasgow, 5 Mar, 1pm
The inaugural Glaswegian Record Fair is taking place at the Old Hairdressers this week. Nip down, have a natter with the glitterbrains of the local music industry (Olive Grove Records, Fuzzkill, Struggletown and Twin City will all be there), before wrapping up the eve with live shows from Catholic Action (pictured), Sweaty Palms and the Van T's. Dundee Contemporary Arts and The Fruitmarket Gallery are delighted to present MARK WALLINGER MARK, the first exhibition in Scotland by Turner Prize-winning artist, Mark Wallinger. Featuring the id Paintings – Wallinger’s most recent body of work – the exhibition focuses on the themes of identity, reflection and perception through wall-based works, sculpture and film in both venues. This fascinating exhibition of two halves is on show from Sat 4 Mar until Sun 4 Jun.

Wee Dub Festival
Edinburgh, 3-5 Mar, Various venues on the Cowgate
Just as Scotland's climes become slightly less frigid, Wee Dub Fest arrives on the Cowgate to soundtrack it. If dub, reggae and soundsystem are your kinda thing, buy yourself a ticket and get stuck into four gig and club sessions and a bunch of fringe events spread across seven venues. Line-up includes Mad Professor, Macka B and the Roots Ragga Band, Iration Steppas and, of course Glasgow's very own Mungo's Hifi.

Summerhall's Mardi Gras Party
Summerhall, Edinburgh, 4 Mar, 11pm
Whether you're prepping to cut back over Lent or are just looking for a big March blow-out, find some carnival garms and go party at Summerhall. Disco nuns Rides of Christ will be in attendance, along with Brass Gumbo and Rise Kogona & The Jit Jive Band. Image: Mouni Feddag
