V&A Dundee Opening Weekend

The time has come, the wait is finally over, and other melodramatic statements, which inevitably lead up to the announcement that the V&A Dundee is now here. The much-anticipated new museum, designed by celebrated Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, opens its doors this weekend, and over 20,000 people from Dundee, across Scotland and around the world are expected to attend the opening 3D Festival, which features a headline performance from Scottish music icons Primal Scream.

The Glasgow band will also be unveiling a new work with contemporary visual artist and Turner Prize nominee Jim Lambie, while the V&A’s inaugural exhibition will be Ocean Liners: Speed & Style, which reimagines the golden age of ocean travel. Beyond this opening extravaganza, the £80m museum will allow people to experience the remarkable story of design past, present and future, and the vital contribution design makes to all our lives.

Its permanent collection, meanwhile, will tell the story of Scotland’s design heritage and feature around 300 exhibits drawn from the collections of the V&A, as well as from museums and private collections across Scotland and the world, covering everything from architecture to ceramics, fashion to videogame design.

"From the beginning, V&A Dundee needs to be a place that is rooted in the city and the region, and that people are involved in helping formulate," the museum's director, Philip Long, told us. So head along and get involved, or at least get an up-close look at Kuma’s extraordinary building.
