Rae-Yen Song, Tramway
We’re looking forward to Rae-Yen Song’s epic new exhibition opening at Tramway this weekend. It’s Song’s biggest solo presentation to date, and sees the Glasgow-based artist taking over Tramway’s vast gallery space, transforming the old tram depot into an aquatic wonderland shaped by ancestral knowledge, memory and imagination.
At the exhibition’s heart, Song transforms the ancestral figure of tua mak (大眼, which translates to “big eyes” in the Teochew dialect). Tua mak is said to have drowned at sea in Singapore at thirteen years old and is only known to the artist through familial memories and myths. In this interpretation, tua mak becomes a lifeform that is ever-evolving and in perpetual migration. Tramway, from 15 Nov (preview 14 Nov)
