Perfect Day in Dundee with Dundee Radio Club
Becca and Su from Dundee Radio Club talk us through their perfect day in Dundee
How do you start your day in Dundee?
Becca: Slowly! Hydrating! A walk to the river, or a cycle!
Su: A walk to the water to say good morning to the seals.
Becca: If it’s a Sunday – popping Jam Radio on!
What’s the weather like on your perfect day?
Su: It’s always perfect sunny weather in Dundee.
Becca: Big blue skies – with interesting clouds, that don’t obscure the sun!
You’re going out for breakfast – where do you go and what are you eating?
Becca: Eastfield brunch, please. That blackboard is filled with goodies. Start with eggs, finish with pancakes!
Su: Followed by a Noch coffee.
What would you say are the unmissable sights in Dundee?
Becca: Fisher and Donaldson's fudge doughnut counter. The ultimate (ephemeral) souvenir. Additional souvenirs can be picked up from Volk Gallery, newly relocated to Central Library.
Su: Going up the Law is always a wonderful way to see the city. We recently held a listening session there with Dundee Feminist Bird Club for Sound Camp’s REVEIL.
Where are you going for lunch and what are you having?
Becca: There are some great sandwich spots in Dundee. The new place Loom, EH9’s Betsy bagel and Höfn’s crisp sando! But, my favourite lunch treat is a soup from the University of Dundee Chaplaincy Centre – a chat with longstanding Linda and a catch up with friends from Cooper Gallery.
Su: Heather Street Food is also a super bagel spot, across from the urban beach (you read that right).
Are there any activities that are unique to the city?
Su: Being able to walk everywhere.
Becca: Doing a Dundee Design Trails tour – an audio-based guide to explore the city, put together by the wonderful UNESCO Dundee, with Yalla Riso’s Luke Greer and Dundee-based illustrator Rhianne Connelly – which we did the audio bits for! Maps are available at Central Library and V&A Dundee!
Su: There are also some great murals, including a new collaborative one by Dundee wonder Rhona Jack and Lebanese artist Romy Matar.
Where do you always take visitors?
Su: I usually get very excited when someone visits and become an over-enthusiastic tour guide.
Becca: We recently took a friend to the Tay Bridge Bar as a bit of a Michael Marra homage! And also signpost to favourite spots; Le Freak Records, Generator Projects, and Sharing Not Hoarding billboard gallery.
Su: The McManus! RRS Discovery! And a wander around the V&A.
It’s late afternoon, time for a drink. Where are you heading?
Su: Rum and ginger beer, with scampi fries at The Phoenix.
Becca: A little beer garden beero at Art Bar.
What does your evening look like?
Becca: Maybe a little folk music at Mennies, or something from Canvas’s very eclectic programme. Maybe its Bizarro Video Club night?! Or sometimes an exhibition opening at Generator or DCA!
And afterwards, how does the night end on your perfect Dundee day?
Becca: Listening to Funky Gunners DJing somewhere, or dancing big shapes to Dom’s selections at a Peace n Jam night!
Su: A walk up to Mills Observatory and then back to the river (to say goodnight to the seals).
