Thrill The World

Thrill The World will try to hold the world's largest zombie dance this weekend.

The current Guinness World Record for largest simultaneous dance is still, alas, held by the Hokey–Cokey, danced in Canada in 2002 by 197,569 primary school students. Surely a sillier dance could not possibly be attempted. But where there's a record, there's someone who wants to break it. Enter Thrill The World, a massive simultaneous dance event, bringing the zombie dancing of Michael Jackson's Thriller to, er, the world.

Everyone loves Thriller. Well, maybe not everyone, but it can't be denied that it is one of those 'classic moments' in the evolution of music. Thriller pushed the boundaries of what was accepted or thought possible in a music video, making history by creating an actual short narrative, rather than merely showing the artist performing on stage. And whatever you may think of Michael Jackson, plasticised kiddy-fiddler or not, his virtuosity and talent is undeniable. Thriller is a brilliant dance. No, really.

If you need a reason to dance it (as if), you can register your group with Thrill The World through their website and do it for charity, the choice of which is completely up to you. The website also teaches you how to do the dance if you're not sure of the finer nuances, and for inspiration has links to a wedding Thriller and Bollywood Thriller, the latter of which has to be seen to be believed.

Thanks to the vision of founder Ines Markeljevic to inspire the world to Thriller, zombie dancing has spread internationally; events are taking place throughout Britain, and in Scotland there's a big event organised in Motherwell, of all places. Even if you're not taking part, the sight of several hundred people going 'Grrr! Argh!' has got to be worth the trip alone. It's Halloween, it's zombies, it's Thriller. What's not to love?
