The “giving albums away for free” trend shows no sign of letting up. So far, everyone from Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails, to Prince and The Charlatans have participated, finally grasping Chuck D's record company shedding prophecy from years back. They've all enjoyed varying degrees of success, and rather pleasingly for indie rock lovers who want their tunes for gratis, they're soon to be joined by another big name.

Buffalo cosmic rockers Mercury Rev have just announced their intent to get in on the act this Autumn. To mark the release of their new album 'proper', Snowflake Midnight, they're intending to give the accompanying full length digital companion Strange Attractor away absolutely free to anyone that has signed up to their digital mailing list.

Both albums will be released on the 29th of September and to get your fill, all you have to do is visit www.mercuryrev.com and subscribe.

Early reports suggest the releases are set to mirror the classic Mercury Rev of Yerself Is Steam and Deserters Songs, but lets not tempt fate eh?

The band play Hydro Connect Festival in Inverary later this year, where they're bound to be previewing new material. Unfortunately, tickets for that aren't free, but you can sign up for that here.
