Exhibition: The Art of Sailor Jerry

A rare chance to see the work of a true tattoo master

Article by Hannah Morgan | 01 Nov 2008

The artwork of the legendary tattoo artist 'Sailor Jerry' is to be exhibited at King Tut's from 10-12 November. Glasgow will be the second city to host the exhibition in the UK.

Norman 'Sailor Jerry' Collins is an iconic American folk artist, and widely regarded as the founding father of modern tattoo art. Working in Honolulu's Chinatown back in theĀ  days when a tattoo was more like a badge of honour from a wild seafaring adventure than just a Black Flag logo on your arm for shits and giggles, Sailor Jerry was there, inking original and intricate designs that would mark him out as a legend in the field. Often imitated, Jerry was also an innovator - the first tattoo artist to use purple ink (previously thought to be impossible), the first to fuse eastern influences with traditional American folk art, and a pioneer in the use of sterile needles.

The Art of Sailor Jerry will explore his designs, his biography, his influences, and the enduring influence he himself had on the artform. There will also be samples of Sailor Jerry, the rum inspired by the man himself, for those of us - all of us? - who see free booze as something of an incentive towards attending things. There will also be the chance for visitors to win one of the displayed pieces.

A unique opportunity for fans of tattoo culture, fans of American folk art, and of course, fans of rum...
