The mastermind behind BBC One's revival of the cult TV classic Dr Who is set to step down.

Russell T. Davies, the executive producer and lead writer, has been widely credited with the show's success since it's relaunch in 2005.

He will be replaced with acclaimed writer and producer Steven Moffat for the next series of Dr Who, which is expected to air in 2010.

Davies said: "It's been a delight and an honour working with Steven, and I can't wait to see where his extraordinary imagination takes The Doctor. Best of all, I get to be a viewer again, watching on a Saturday night!"

Moffat has previously written a number of Dr Who episodes, including 'Blink,' for which he won the writing award at this year's BAFTAs. His recent work has included the BBC sitcom Coupling, and the drama Jekyll.
