Into The New

It's not just about the big names: Into the New brings Glasgow's students into the light.

When Nikki Millican, artistic director of New Territories, received an Honorary Doctorate from Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in 2009, it demonstrated how important her influence and New Territories had become to Glasgow's students of performance. It is natural that the RSAMD's Contemporary Performance Practice integrated its annual Into The New event into the programme, becoming a four day festival within the festival.

Part showcase for students, part series of workshops and talks, it culminates with a symposium that asks how experimental performance can affect social and political change. It also features pieces from recent graduates Naomi Shoba and Peter McMaster, who have already revealed their ability to charm and shock.

As Kate Stannard, a teacher on the CCP course and featured artist at the NRLA comments, "The CPP programme is dedicated to creating, reinventing and exploring new methodologies for creating performance work which respond to a variety of contested and socially engaged contexts, which to my mind is exactly the same as the context for live art."

The connection between New Territories and Into The New is obviously tight, and situates the work of local students into the broader international context of their provocative take on theatre.
