Am I Drunk (£0.59)
Perfect for hazy mornings when sobriety is an ambition rather than a reality, Am I Drunk uses the iPhone’s accelerometer to test your ability to walk in a straight line. Deviate from the path or slow down and the app will mercilessly pronounce you drunk.

Cram (£2.99)
Prepare for important exams by committing study materials to electronic flashcards using Cram. Add pictures or multiple choice selections and have the app test and grade you on what you’ve learned. Cram also allows notes to be shared with friends.

Edinbus (Free)
Absolutely essential for Edinburgh-based students, Edinbus taps into Lothian Buses’ Bus Tracker system to bring live bus time updates for every stop in the city to your phone. Ideal for grabbing those extra few minutes in bed or at the library instead of waiting fruitlessly for a bus.

Epicurious (Free)
An unrelenting diet of pasta and pot noodles is an enduring cliché of student cuisine but with Epicurious, it doesn’t have to be that way. The app puts thousands of recipes at your fingertips and allows you to search for dishes based on the meagre contents of your cupboard.

Evernote (Free)
Evernote is the premier note-taking suite for iPhone, allowing you to create multimedia notes and manage your workload effectively. Perfect for everything from recording audio in a lecture to jotting down a phone number. The premium version enables note sharing and other useful features.

iBartender (£0.59)
University is a time for experimentation and iBartender is the ideal way to sate your curiosity about alcohol. The app contains a huge database of hundreds of cocktail recipes and a very helpful suggestion feature brimming with creative concoctions to make use of even the most unpalatable of tipples.

Shazam (£2.99)
Shazam is an impressive app that can identify songs from just short audio clips. Just hold the iPhone in the direction of the music, tap ‘Shazam’ and within seconds you’ll be presented with song title and artist info. Great for keeping track of memorable tunes when out and about.

Urbanspoon - Free
Something of a sensation in the US, restaurant review app Urbanspoon recently expanded to cover Edinburgh and Glasgow. Search through hundreds of eateries based on area, type of food and price and read user reviews for each. Also includes a rather nifty ‘augmented reality’ feature.
