Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart’s romance has been confirmed by the Twilight director.

Catherine Hardwicke, who worked with the pair on the 2008 movie, explained Kristen was initially sceptical about starting a relationship with her co-star. The 19-year-old eventually decided to give things a go when her feelings became too strong to hide.

Catherine told Time magazine: “In terms of what Kristen told me directly, it didn't happen on the first movie. Nothing crossed the line while on the first film. I think it took a long time for Kristen to realise, OK, I've got to give this a go and really try to be with this person.”

Catherine warned Robert, now 23, not to pursue Kristen when they began working together because she was too young. “After I cast him, I told Robert, don't even think about having a romance with her... She's under 18. You will be arrested,” she said. “Robert has that magnetism, it's easy to understand why they're all crazy about him.”

Robert and Kristen have continually denied they are romantically involved, insisting they are just friends. On Tuesday, they were pictured holding hands while walking in Paris.

Meanwhile, Robert has revealed the secret to his success with women. He insists pale skin is the key to successful relationships, claiming girls don’t like dating tanned boys.

He explained: “The paler you are, the better you do with women. Becoming essentially a sex symbol, being English, you realise you can break a bunch of moulds that I don't think many people realise you can – you don't need to go to the gym or anything!"

Robert is famed for his dishevelled appearance, and insists he has no plans to become tidier. He sees his unruly hair as intrinsic to his acting ability, saying: “It’s 75 per cent of my performance.”
