Chris Brown says many people wish he was in jail.

The singer was sentenced to five years' probation and six months' community labour for punching, biting and choking on/off girlfriend Rihanna in February. He accepts his detractors think he should be behind bars following the assault, rather than promoting his new album.

"There are people that don't want to see me do anything. they wanna see me kind of, basically in jail," he said during an interview with MTV News.

"My thoughts are like, 'Why did it happen?' Like, 'What was I thinking? What is wrong with you?' That's what I'm thinking with myself. That's what my thoughts are, basically, now."

Chris added he is "confused" about the public reaction to the attack and he has no idea how to salvage reputation and career. He explained: "It's like, 'How do we get past it? How do you go from point A to point B? How do you learn from your mistakes, turn it into a positive and help other people with the situation, and at the end of the day become the person that you want to be?' "

However, Chris says is pleased his most loyal fans have continued to "love and support" him. The 20-year-old star's full conversation with Sway, titled Chris Brown: The Interview, will air on MTV tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Rihanna has revealed their relationship became turbulent as it progressed. "The more in love we became, the more dangerous we became for each other," she told Diane Sawyer.

Along with his probation order, Chris was also barred from contacting the singer for five years and told to attend domestic violence classes for 52 weeks.

Chris releases his third album, Graffiti, on December 8. Rihanna's new LP, Rated R, will be available on November 23.
