It may be a bit early in his career to describe Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner as having a Midas touch, but so far he’s done little to dispel such an attribute. Standing Next to Me is another testament to the songwriting prowess of Turner and his Last Shadow Puppets co-conspirator Miles Kane. Coming from their generally well received debut LP, the song layers a lush string arrangement from the London Metropolitan Orchestra over a driving acoustic strum, and sees these elements combine with Turner and Kane’s shared melancholic melodies. The result: a two-and-a-half minute long track of finely crafted retro pop, but there are certain flourishes present that allude to new territories. (Jason Morton)
