Shooting at Unarmed Men - Girls Music

A straight-up Pixies soundalike

Single Review by Andrew Monroe | 15 Jun 2006
Single title: Girls Music
Artist: Shooting at Unarmed Men
Label: Too Pure
Jon Chapple, of the late, much-mourned McLusky, has some big indieland expectations to live up to. Sadly, the first single from his new ride, Shooting at Unarmed Men, doesn't quite meet them. Girls Music is a straight-up Pixies soundalike, think Tame or Cactus, where creeping bass and whispered vocals set up a big, feedback-drenched release. Chapple adds a creepy-ex-boyfriend vibe to the proceedings, but the formula sounds musty and the lyrics, which include lines like "Did you know your vagrant smells like tin?", cry out for a rewrite. Underwhelming. [Andrew Monroe]
