Operahouse - Genius Child

Single Review by Ray Philp | 30 Mar 2009
Single title: Genius Child
Artist: Operahouse
Label: Marrakesh Records
Release date: 30 Mar

When we think of the word ‘epic’ in a general context, the inference is usually positive. It’s apposite to heroism, grandeur, and classic literature. In the context of the ever fickle indie zeitgeist, the term is loaded with a leprous quality that suggests arduous bombast and overwrought melodies. In the case of Operahouse, their involvement with Embrace guitarist Richard McNamara in producing Genius Child heightens those suspicions. It's all the more surprising then that the song turns out to be an atmospheric, Krautrock-inspired marvel. Add to this Johnny Lloyd’s charmingly evasive non-sequiturs, and you never known - the single’s psychedelic nuances just might place the idea of 'epic' firmly back in vogue.
