Of Montreal - Id Engager

Single Review by Jason Morton | 09 Sep 2008
Single title: Id Engager
Artist: Of Montreal
Label: Polyvinyl
Release date: 8 Sep

Id Engager, whilst a bizarre choice to close Of Montreal's forthcoming Skeletal Lamping, makes for an excellently jilted dance-pop single. Though a little lighter lyrically than the dense and dark tales of Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?, musically they continue along the same lines as that deservedly acclaimed album's more adventurous and unhinged tracks (especially Faberge Falls for Shuggie). Band leader Kevin Barnes squeals over the first 30 seconds before retreating to a harmony over an electro funk bassline, then crooning over the chorus that he "don't want to be your man/just want to play with you." But judging from this track, one has to wonder whether he's warning unsuspecting lovers, or pop music as a medium. [Jason Morton]
