Lorraine - Transatlantic Flight

vaguely likeable in its kitsch way

Single Review by Nick Mitchell | 15 Jul 2006
Label: Columbia
Norwegian electro-pop practitioners Lorraine cite their influences as the Pet Shop Boys, New Order and Kraftwerk, and, true to their word, Transatlantic Flight sounds exactly as if it were made in 1986. When a band works within this synth-pop aesthetic (Lorraine lack a drummer but allegedly have a guitarist) they'd better be able to produce original, recognisable songs, or else become minimalistically bland – all sheen and no substance, so to speak. Transatlantic Flight is vaguely likeable in its kitsch way, but too monotonous to stamp itself on popular culture to the extent that their keyboard-prodding forebears did twenty years ago.
