Eugene McGuinness

Wouldn't sound too out of place in an Orange commercial

Single Review by Neil Ferguson | 07 Nov 2007
The insatiable demand of advert-makers for the honeyed, neo-folk tunes of quirky singer-songwriters has seen something of a resurgence in a genre that was once the sole providence of Devendra Banhart. It is this yearning that has paved the way for the likes of Liverpool's Eugene McGuinness and his new single, Bold Street. A tale about a diurnal walk down a street in his hometown is all gently strummed rhythms, with languid melodies flowing freely over the tapping and twinkling of a xylophone. Effortless and playful, Bold Street wouldn't sound too out of place in one of those bloody Orange adverts. (Neil Ferguson)
