Depeche Mode - John The Revelator / Lilian

a nice little yin-yang of a catchy double A-side

Single Review by Johnny Langlands | 15 Jun 2006
Single title: John The Revelator / Lilian
Artist: Depeche Mode
Label: Mute
John The Revelator may kick in with all the snarling bombast of an electronic cousin to the goth rock classic I Feel You from Dave Gahan's more debauched days, but that doesn't stop it from drifting into a still more familiar pop formula that the 'Mode devised back in the 80s. 'Pain and misery always hit the spot' Gahan tells us during Lilian, apparently a song about some heinous twisted heartbreaker of a femme. Hardly summer anthem material then, but it's a nice little yin-yang of a catchy double A-side to recall the way that a synthesizer sounds when it's been slapped about with sincerity.
