Single title: Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth
Artist: Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Label: Wichita/V2
If you ignored the hype surrounding this Brooklyn orchestra in the first place, it needn't take more than this to realise that CYHSY are sheer twisted pop genius. Open the gates and in cometh buzzing organs, a modest disco-beat followed by a guitar harmony that's too simple but too brilliant to be true and not to ignore; the cracked wailing of maestro Alec Ounsworth that is occasionally so tormented it makes you wonder if his childhood ever went undefiled. At almost six minutes long The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth builds up a beehive of buzzing pop-pleasantries which makes you laugh, makes you cry, changes your life for an instant - and by the time it's over it's so close to near damn perfect that the song must have emerged from a dream. Buy, listen and realise why CYHSY are in a league of their own in today's Indie-climate. [Chris Nordeng]
