Avenged Sevenfold - Dear God

Feels like a cheap joke

Single Review by Jamie Borthwick | 03 Jul 2008
Single title: Dear God
Artist: Avenged Sevenfold
Label: EMI
Release date: 7 Jul

Quite what has happened to Avenged Sevenfold is a mystery. Once a screamaholic fire and brimstone metalcore act, the softer sound of album City of Angels was blamed on singer M. Shadow’s serious vocal chord injury. Developing a softer sound with time isn’t exactly a new phenomenon, but Dear God may just mark the moment that A7X disappeared up their own collective anus. This country and western ballad, with some heartfelt lyrical nonsense and not even a hint of irony, feels like a cheap joke. Mind you, when you’ve already bagged lucrative support slots with the likes of Iron Maiden, why care what people think anymore? [Jamie Borthwick]
