Atmosphere - Shoulda Known

Single Review by Steve Glencross | 23 Apr 2008
Single title: Shoulda Known
Artist: Atmosphere
Label: Rhymesayers Entertainment
Release date: 14 Apr 2008

Atmosphere have delivered a welcome shot in the arm to a genre (hip-hop) that was in dire need of a fresh approach, waxing lyrical about paranoia, egos and weirdness instead of the mandatory (and consequently mundane) subjects of guns and drugs. Shoulda Known is the first single from the highly anticipated album When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold due next month. These guys have been hammering out quality cuts of unique, wacked out hip-hop for a while now for the Rhymesayers label, and this single doesn’t scrimp on the quality stakes. Ant throws down a simple but super catchy groove with a strung out bass line, joined by Slugs' moody storybook narrative of addiction and regret. Grade A hip-hop freakery.
