Alan McKim's vocal delivery on Living In The City haphazardly treads the fine line between passionate and forced. Musically, it's anonymously catchy fare that neither offends nor impresses, but McKim’s vocals tip the balance, and not for the better. After an accomplished verse, his rough Scots burr mutates into an unpleasantly over-zealous, vowel-heavy chorus that sounds exaggerated and ridiculous - presumably not the intended effect. On Colours he goes one better, somehow stretching the word ‘night’ to an impressively over-wrought thirteen syllables. It's frustratingly clear that McKim is not without vocal talents; it's just a shame he currently uses them in such an undisciplined way.
Alan McKim plays King Tut's Wah Wah Hut on 4 Jul.
