Silverclub - Answers EP
Silverclub are a Manchester supergroup of sorts – maybe not on the same level as Electronic, but its members include Jim Noir, the pop-folk chap from the Adidas world cup ad. Their debut EP defies straightforward classification: breathy opener Answers owes a debt to Junior Boys; Short Sharp Shock is an exciting and energetic combination of guitars, buzzing basslines, bleepy synths and techno rhythms, saved from technological obscurity by some typically attitude-laden Manc vocals. Third track Safety Checks sounds bizarrely like a Northern Rolling Stones, complete with Sympathy-style ‘woo-hoo’s. Silverclub are at their best when sticking to the electro template – the EP starts off as an exciting prospect, but trails off when the combo try to rock. [Euan Ferguson]
