Loops Haunt – Zenith EP

Single Review by Bram E. Gieben | 03 Dec 2012
Single title: Zenith EP
Artist: Loops Haunt
Label: Black Acre
Release date: 3 Dec

Ostensibly starting out as a dubstep label, with releases by the likes of DZ, Marlow and Scotland's magnificent Akira Kiteshi, Black Acre have evolved into a mult-faceted, cross-genre platform, featuring experimental, upfront bass music of all stripes and species. Loops Haunt, also a Scot, follows up his 2011 Ark 12-inch with this thrilling and all-too brief experimental release, featuring seven very short tracks.

Galleon and Mun Rhul both owe a stylistic debt to RZA instrumentals, with bassed-up kicks and distressed hi-hats and a head-nodding boom-bap tempo. The title track pairs some skeletal,Aphex-like electronica with a classic Amen break, while Heal is a freaked-out, lo-fi broken beat space lullaby. It's a satisfying and complex listen, showcasing a similar aesthetic to Brainfeeder artists like Samiyam and FlyLo. [Bram E Gieben]
