Kin - Dot Dot Dot EP
Manchester-baed Kin has one of the strangest and most compelling voices you’re ever likely to hear. It swells and builds like a more disturbing Karen O or Beth Gibbons, breaking into a cat-like mewl whenever it reaches a climax, which is quite often, and sounds like it is forced through gritted teeth. Her debut EP starts with the angular and arty guitars of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and travels along the outer edges of the current crop of outré female singers (Florence, Marina, Bat for Lashes). The militaristic drums and minimal arrangements also bring to mind a more feminine and atmospheric Prinzhorn Dance School, especially on closer Hibiscus. If Kin’s extraordinary delivery doesn’t leave you cold, there’s a lot to be enjoyed here. [Euan Ferguson]
