Jon Jones and the Beatniks Movement - Engine Power EP

Put it on to clear a room of all the losers with no time for real rock 'n' roll

Single title: Engine Power EP
Artist: Jon Jones and the Beatniks Movement
Label: Fuck Off Records
Release date: 29 Jul

Holy shit! Fuzzed up to the max, this record just goes right for the face like a pitbull to a baby. The impression given is that the guitars were plugged straight into the tape machine, pulsing well into the red the entire time. The bass and drums also run hot throughout as frontman Irish Joe hurls words around like pint glasses. Support slots with Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster seem to have made a significant lasting impression on Jon Jones et al. They share the Brighton quintet's over-amphetaminised outlook on rockabilly and blatant disregard for convention when solo-ing on guitar; the strings shriek like cheesewire on fourth tune Pushin' Fuckin'. This Engine Power EP is a relatively under-produced affair, but that works perfectly given the circumstances, and any polishing would only seem phoney. Put it on to clear a room of all the losers with no time for real rock n' roll. [Chris Cusack]
