Fifty Caliber Smile - The Cycle EP

Album Review by Joe Barton | 01 Sep 2009
Album title: The Cycle EP
Artist: Fifty Caliber Smile
Label: Self Released
Release date: 9 May

With Biffy Clyro promising another album, Fifty Caliber Smile prove that when it comes to exporting heavy rock with emotional substance, Scotland is anything but a one trick pony. Opening track The Cycle unleashes a twisting, Tool-like riff, showing that the band are pushing towards a more complex sound than the sludgy groove metal of their previous EP, Evolution. This genre-bending reappears on Gemini, which boasts some Shaft-esque wah-wah quotes, as well as a potentially chart-pillaging chorus hook. Niall Hillen possesses a voice that carries the authority of a Phil Anselmo, but is capable of vulnerability when the song calls for it; perfect for both emo kids in need of some clout, and metalheads that just wanna sing from the heart.
