...attempts to distill the current trend for punk-electro crossover - with varying degrees of success

Album title: Leave Them All Behind 2
Artist: Various
Label: Modular
With a tracklist reading like an NME reader's wet dream, this second compilation of edgy floor-fillers from Aussie label Modular attempts to distill the current trend for punk-electro crossover - with varying degrees of success. The mix starts on the indie side of the tracks with a double dose of female-fronted raunch in the vastly-differing forms of CSS's Let's Make Love... and The Gossip's Standing in the Way of Control. Proceedings then take an electro turn with full remixes of Futureheads, Klaxons and Wolfmother which gel surprisingly well. The second half slumps slightly, though is held up by a distinctive remix from Swedish wizards The Knife, an untouched original from compatriots Peter, Bjorn & John and a Hot Chip-meets-Erol Alkan mash-up. Contributions from Ali Love and The Rakes let the side down, and some of the mixing is distinctly amateurish, but if all you need is a party soundtrack, this'll do nicely. [Nick Mitchell]
