The Spinto Band - Moonwink

Album Review by Jason Morton | 24 Sep 2008
Album title: Moonwink
Artist: The Spinto Band
Label: Fierce Panda
Release date: 22 Sep

There’s twee, there’s psych-pop, and if they had a baby, it’d be Delaware’s The Spinto Band. They manage both seasick rhythms and frantic pop freak-outs on Moonwink, but the tilt-a-whirl traipsing from track to track could stir a certain reluctance in the casual listener. With a vocal style reminiscent of David Byrne, Nick Krill is most memorable as a ringmaster of sorts for the LP; opener Later On is all him, and sounds like a Coney Island high with cracked surf rock keys, whilst The Carnival takes in surf guitar, horns, whistling and whatever else it can throw in the mix. Thomas Hughes, though, offers some refuge in his turns as frontman, with tracks like Needlepoint and They All Laughed coming as close to straightforward indie pop as the album gets. By no means a bad disc, Moonwink might be best in small doses till one develops affection for its dizzying mish-mash of styles. [Jason Morton]
