SUNN O))) is for wandering, where did I go? Through pre-promotion and inserted field recordings, the duo signalled the woods, so I went. I stepped out and faced a crumb of a once expansive forest bookended by a parking lot and a highway. I slipped a headphone out. Guitar distortion hummed sweeter than backfiring cars, its discordance more controlled. I heard water and wind swallowed in its mix but nothing of the sort out there. I saw trees without birds, cars yet no people, and here, SUNN O))) released their first self-titled record after nearly 30 years. I suppose, cosmically speaking, we’re both late.

So the music makes you project, like a silent therapist and a chatty client, and I tell it what’s on my mind. What country isn’t built on blood and what have you made that I haven’t heard before – that sort of thing. Both are a shrug of the shoulders and a point to the Rothko-laden cover. I guess it’s more about the suggestion, since who has an answer to anything nowadays? Who will do it? SUNN O))) aims these pieces like haphazard missiles to the point. What good could a drone do today?
