Spotlight Kid – Disaster Tourist
Spotlight Kid, AKA former Six By Seven drummer Chris Davis, joined by Bent and Mylo contributor Katty Heath and cohorts, delve into the back catalogues of My Bloody Valentine, Lush and Slowdive to form a cogent update of the early 90s shoegaze sound. Assertive rhythmic patterns and a sharp pop sensibility prevent Disaster Tourist from being an ill-advised tribute album, and even if the material is blatantly derivative, they succeed in grasping the dynamics of the genre with some panache.
Plan Comes Apart and Forget Yourself In Me bestow a precision and economy on a style that often carried dangers of self-indulgence, and it is telling that the longer tracks here – including seven minute closer Pulled Apart By Horses – don't quite possess the same power as their fresher, more direct moments. That said, Disaster Tourist deserves to be heard as a noteworthy sequel to their 2006 debut, and an interesting take on an often misjudged era of music.
