Primevals – Disinhibitor
Formed in Glasgow in the early eighties, Primevals are still flaunting their rock’n’roll chops with Disinhibitor as they approach their thirtieth year together. The outfit – who still remain relatively unknown in the UK – have garnered no shortage of accolades over the years; sharing stages with The Cramps and recording sessions for the late, great John Peel in their lifespan.
With this latest LP the band prove that they’ve still got barrels of big riffs and dirty licks in their cannon. Defying Science and American Road Trip prove to be the most essential on show, with vocalist Michael Rooney sounding particularly smug on the latter as he sings: “On an American road trip, not everyone can handle it, tonight and 60 miles to sunset.”
Primevals don’t stray too far from the garage template, though they do dabble in throws of Americana and blues, most successfully on the ice-cold I’ve Never Seen You Looking So Clean, and less so on the jaunty Black Cloud Comin’. At 18 songs and 51 minutes, Disinhibitor could perhaps do with a little fat trimmed off, but there’s plenty of meat to get stuck into here.
