Japanese band maya ongaku’s second album Nothing Space Music unfolds as a quietly textural journey, balancing stillness with subtle movement to create an atmosphere that feels intimate. Opening track Vanishing Waves sets the tone immediately. Metallic and silvery synths interweave with acoustic guitar and gentle piano while understated vocals sit in unison. The song is reminiscent of 70s Japanese rock bands like Happy End, with a touch of psychedelia in the spacious arrangement.

Thinkingscape breaks the haziness with a foreboding string opening, but the tension rapidly resolves into something more circular and grounded than the previous tracks. It's the most structurally distinct track on the album, anchoring the dreaminess and soothing soundscape seen elsewhere. Gentle percussion and breathy winds combine into a texture that is almost creamy in Hisoku Blue. The track rewards attentive listening, with a more dynamic arc that adds depth to the tranquil flow of the record.

Much of the album settles into a narrow emotional and sonic register, which is floaty, softly textured and quietly hopeful, and after a few tracks, the effect threatens to tip from immersive to monotonous. It’s a cohesive record, but one that requires space and finds beauty in patience.
