Opening Man/Woman/Chainsaw's debut LP is Only Girl, a sweet, dancy arrangement of violin, guitar and drums, a sonic combination that’s become a staple of British alt-rock bands over the last decade. London indie rockers cannot get enough of string instruments, and Man/Woman/Chainsaw are no exception.
Sonically, one-off alt-country track Goddamn, Lizard Man! doesn’t make much sense, chucked between two ballads. Yet contextually it’s an important dis on the men who slither around the music industry preying on young femme artists. From there, the six-piece transition with ease in the middle of their record from keyboard-driven ballad Lighter, on which they sing, ‘Oh baby you make my whole life light up / I barely recognise / The time that you give to me is my favourite treat’ to dance-punk synth banger Nosedive. Using the metaphor of a bird to describe the blindly destructive tendency of relationships, Emmie-Mae Avery sings: ‘Bird hit the glass / I can't see in front of me / Let me go on, let me go / Hit a nosedive, cannonball’.
