Lisa Germano - In The Maybe World

like a birthday girl trying on party hats

Album Review by Sean Michaels | 13 Sep 2006
Album title: In The Maybe World
Artist: Lisa Germano
Label: Young God Records
Lisa Germano sounds as she's always sounded. Nothing is shaken up on 'In The Maybe World': the same lace curtains are in the window, the same velvet sheets lie upon the bed, the same woman in gold earrings sings with lips near your ear. And while Germano has no obligation to change from album to album like a birthday girl trying on party hats, I can't help but feel she doesn't justify her stasis. These are the same sort of somnolent songs – acoustic guitar, violin, farfisa, and Germano's breathy bedroom poetry. For a moment the title track almost sounds like a pop song, but then we're back to snooze and languorous angst. It's not enough to recall Leonard Cohen, Kate Bush, Rufus Wainwright: Germano needs to get me to forget them. [Sean Michaels]
In The Maybe World' is out now.
