Laura Michelle Kelly - The Storm Inside

a good variety of genres, designed to show off what the girl's voice can do

Album title: The Storm Inside
Artist: Laura Michelle Kelly
Label: Angel
Leaving her West End experiences in her carpet bag, Laura Michelle Kelly takes her performing career to a new level with the release of her debut album 'The Storm Inside' featuring a mix not only of genres, but of songs old and new. Intriguing reworkings of some familiar tracks including Reach Out and Somewhere Only We Know are intermixed with songs written by the artist, or in collaboration with other artists. Of these, the title song is undoubtedly the highlight – it's worth buying the whole album for. There is a good variety of genres, designed to show off what the girl's voice can do, but there are weaker points (notably the Jamie Cullum-penned Sweet Solution) where a brassier quality to her voice wouldn't have gone amiss. Nonetheless, the slower, more delicate tracks are performed well, and this album will no doubt do its job. [Graham McIntosh]
