Land of Talk - Some are Lakes

Album Review by Jason Morton | 26 Sep 2008
Album title: Some are Lakes
Artist: Land of Talk
Label: One Little Indian
Release date: 6 Oct

Some are Lakes is basically a hipster's favourite album from the mid to late 90s - reanimated, cleaned-up and put to work for a new generation. The album's moods rely heavily on the guitar work of frontwoman Elizabeth Powell - which alternate between angular to dissonant and thrashy - rather than her vocals, which remain restrained throughout. Slow burner It's Okay sets itself apart from the other nine tracks collected here with ease as the tempo is taken down while Powell and Co try out a Stevie Nicks style jam with great success. Drawing heavily from PJ Harvey and early Cat Power, Land of Talk don't break a whole lot of new ground on their debut full length, but the territory they explore is tried and true, making for a pleasurable listen and one well worthy of return visits.
