Kaito - Trust

Album Review by Euan Ferguson | 02 Sep 2009
Album title: Trust
Artist: Kaito
Label: Kompakt
Release date: 28 Sep

Kaito, aka Hiroshi Watanabe, has long been a DJing stalwart of the US East Coast trance scene, playing in clubs like Twilo (in which Sasha and Digweed held a legendary residency at the height of the £10,000-a-gig superclub era). The expansive, atmospheric music of that time was made for mainrooms and took an age to build into anything approaching a climax – eight-hour sets were common. All this seems like the antithesis of today’s downloaded mashed-up club culture, where bands take the stage after DJs and spending more than a fiver to get into a night seems a bit excessive. Watanabe now releases on Kompakt, the hip German label feted for its soulful approach to techno deepness. This transition sums up the feel of Trust – soaring, trancey melodies, deep beats and washy synths, but with a more intimate approach. Nothing groundbreaking, but a pleasant enough trip all the same.
