Jimpster – Porchlight and Rockingchairs

Album Review by Bram E. Gieben | 22 Apr 2013
Album title: Porchlight and Rockingchairs
Artist: Jimpster
Label: Freerange
Release date: 20 May

With over 20 years of production experience behind him, deep house supremo Jimpster's new album, his first for six years, is a polished affair. He attempts to position these tracks in similar sonic territory to the likes of Lapalux and Falty DL, producers who might well cite him as an influence, but there's little of the spirit of sonic adventure found in their recent work – each track is overly finessed, too smooth.

There are a few pleasant moments – the uncomplicated, pulsing house of Hold My Hand is a solid offering, as is the title track, with its sweeps of white noise and funk-infused bass. These Times, featuring vocalist Jinadu, flirts with post-dubstep pops and clicks. However, largely occupying a mid-range tempo that would kill most house-oriented dancefloors, and with not quite enough range and depth to stand alone as a home listen, Porchlight and Rockingchairs is ultimately a bland, forgettable affair.
