Herbaliser - Herbal Tonic

Album Review by Ryan Drever | 14 Jun 2010
Album title: Herbal Tonic
Artist: The Herbaliser
Label: Ninja Tune
Release date: 14 Jun

Herbal Tonic, without being too obvious about it, is a "best of" album, collecting some of the finest tracks legendary Londoners Jake Wherry and Olly Teeba AKA The Herbaliser have to offer from their 15-year career so far. Putting emphasis on the music, the band's heavily jazz, funk (and weed) influenced beats sound as good on their own as they do when paired with some of the world’s most stellar MCs – just check out the instrumentals here from the pair's "sessions" series if you are at all in doubt.

However, some of their best work does indeed come from some frankly first class collaborations – from the impeccable MF Doom cropping on It Ain't Nuttin' to Roots Manuva's run on the hypnotic grooves Starlight, and of course, pretty much anything featuring frequent partner-in-rhyme, Jean Gray. It’s both a potent reminder of their greatness and perhaps the perfect place to start. [Ryan Drever]
