Ghost - In Stormy Nights

What The Mars Volta would sound like if they were a bunch of folkies

Album Review by Neil Ferguson | 11 Jan 2007
Album title: In Stormy Nights
Artist: Ghost
Label: Drag City
The ninth full-length album from Ghost, In Stormy Nights contains well over an hour of music across its six tracks. Twenty-eight of these minutes come from the afflictive 'Hemicyclic Anthelion', the expanse of which is just too great to describe. With sounds as diverse as folk, rock and even some neo-industrial electronic experimentation, this is what The Mars Volta would sound like if they were a bunch of folkies, and if they'd actually managed to break down the structures of music in the way that Ghost so easily have. Not once contrived or deliberate, In Stormy Nights is an improvised album of acute dynamism and beauty, bound together so smoothly as to betray the full spectrum and complexity of the sounds on display.
