FLO – Therapy at the Club
On FLO's latest album, Therapy at the Club, the trio reach for a more box office pop sound with mixed results
FLO’s 2024 debut, Access All Areas, introduced them as one of the most exciting girl groups in the country, with impeccable harmonies and a sound firmly indebted to noughties R'n'B. On their follow up, Therapy at the Club, the trio reach for a more box office pop sound with mixed results. The album’s opening stretch contains some of its most enjoyable girl group moments, with Cry Ugly delivering the record’s funniest lyrics ('1am on the dot, guess it’s bullshit o’clock'). The irresistibly catchy Leak It delivers Pussycat Dolls-esque braggadocio over cinematic strings and a punchy beat.
But the album becomes less consistent as it progresses. Back-to-back tracks I Can’t Be High Around You and Sober both circle very similar intoxicated situationship territory. And while it’s thrilling to hear FLO exploring a broader palette, it sometimes results in their pitch perfect harmonies being lost beneath crowded arrangements. Miss U Missing Me strips things back - allowing their voices to shine again - and represents a real highlight.
There’s lots to enjoy on the record but at 16 tracks long it could perhaps do with a firmer edit. Its best moments suggest that there is a truly great ten-track pop album here trying to get out.
