Fink – Perfect Darkness

Album Review by Paul Neeson | 13 Jun 2011
Album title: Perfect Darkness
Artist: Fink
Label: Ninja Tune
Release date: 13 Jun

Transitioning from his role as a successful DJ and producer to that of Ninja Tune peddler of folk-inflected acoustica back in 2006, Fin 'Fink' Greenall’s sophomore release, Biscuits for Breakfast, heralded a bold new direction both for the label and artist known for their beats-based output.

Having remained true to this revised modus operandi, 2011 sees the release of Fink’s fifth studio album, with the Ninja stable's assertion that Perfect Darkness will earn his deserved recognition; though given the album's unwavering fidelity to its predecessors, it’s unclear as to quite why this should be.

Such expectations may be set somewhat unrealistically high, but Perfect Darkness still provides an interesting listen. Greenall’s distinctive rasp scores the shuddering blues romp of Wheels and the heavy-handed acoustic stomp of Fear is Like Fire, while the well-executed ambient-folk of closer Berlin Sunrise cinders and fades to end an album which ultimately finds Fink seeking the great, finding the good.
