Album title: I Forgive You
Artist: Cynthia Erivo
Label: Verve Records / Republic Records
Release date: 6 Jun

On I Forgive You, Cynthia Erivo swaps the stage for something far more personal. The Grammy, Emmy, and Tony Award-winning performer steps fully into her own voice on this sprawling 20-track collection – a genre-spanning, emotionally charged album that unfolds in four acts, each marked by a cappella interludes.

It’s heartbreak that cuts deepest early on. More Than Twice captures the rawest ache, ending in a minute-long wail that lands like a guttural release. Midway through, Push and Pull shifts gears with a sultry R'n'B flair and a surprise rap verse, co-written by Hamilton’s Anthony Ramos – a playful jolt of desire and confidence. Then comes Holy Refrain, channelling gospel grandeur and divine romance, its dramatic key change soars skyward and underlines Erivo’s vocal power.

Sonically, the album’s an ambitious mix: gospel, folk, pop – even yodelling – all live here, and surprisingly, it works. Everything on I Forgive You feels intentional – the nails tapped on Replay and Erivo's own whistle are part of her tapestry. Some moments meander, but the heart never wavers. More than a vanity project, this is a statement of intent – raw, expressive and deeply human. I Forgive You isn’t just Erivo’s reintroduction; it’s her reclamation.
