Over the course of multiple projects – six studio albums, various EPs, two live albums and two compilation albums – Cold War Kids have made major contributions to rock music. On their seventh album, the band thrills with nice instrumental solos and songs that come with interesting musical twists.

Beyond the Pale is perhaps the most unique song on New Age Norms 1 due to its slow tempo and piano chords. From the steady pace, to the introduction of the backing vocals, and vocal dexterity of Nathan Willett, the track features one of the best compositions on the record. Fine Fine Fine is an upbeat track with a rhythm that grabs your attention in little or no time; motivating with lyrics like 'I don’t want to run from the pain' and 'Life is crashing before my eyes / But I was born on the wild side'.

The opening track, Complainer features a funk sound and a jaw-dropping guitar solo before the outro. Meanwhile, Waiting for Your Love features an exciting instrumental breakout. The eight-track album features themes on the new age norms of class, gender, race and power that shape the world today. Beyond the sweet melodies and striking instrumentals, New Age Norms 1 is a project with a message.
