Button Up - No Dancin' On the Tables

Undeniably retro, but a great listen nonetheless

Album title: No Dancin' On the Tables
Artist: Button Up
Label: Self Released
There's nothing better than being taken aback at the quality of an album and No Dancin' On The Tables is one such revelation. Button Up consists of bassist Garry John Kane and percussionist Ross McFarlane, along with regulars from Glasgow's soul and jazz joint The Buff Club, including Del Amitri man Justin Currie and Joseph Malik. The musical style takes in elements of loungecore, blues and jazz as well as soul, funk and a little bit of rock, and the result is a collection of songs that are refreshingly diverse yet collectively impressive. Of the five instrumental tracks, the highlights are the Hammond-soaked Checkin' Out and The Fox, which comes on like a long-lost Blaxploitation theme tune. Justin Currie reinvents his vocal style impressively on three covers, the best of which is Rudy Stevenson's I'm Gonna Leave You. It's all undeniably retro, but a great listen nonetheless.
