BURNINGBeeS – goodseedbadsoil
Drifting and mingling in the nomadic manner, the musical projects of Neil Grant and Stuart Hobbs have been abundant, if short-lived. The former dabbled with local acts Hucksters, Superstar and Telstar Ponies whilst the latter spun out psychedelia in Tiafro whilst DJ-ing on the Glasgow scene. Since teaming together the pair’s collaboration has taken on several incarnations, Liminal, Abacus Roolz and presently BURNINGBeeS.
Their debut record, with artwork portraying a melancholy Zorro-bee, goodseedbadsoil is predominantly acoustic, evoking the comforts of listening to Pet Sounds while monged out on a beanbag. Like Midlake but more subdued and wearied, Vainsane has an eerily redemptive quality whilst Tug At The Sleeves of Nightmares ascends with a Super Furry Animal-esque horn section. Quaint electronic spatters on Hello Mama are reminiscent of The Beta Band or floating through an arcade. Weaved around a mournful cello loop, the single, entitled Eat The Crash, is accompanied by a video comprising flashbacks of creepy taxidermy monkeys and dead goldfish flushed away.
