Biig Piig – 11:11
Reflecting on her past, present, and future, Biig Piig delivers catchy dance tunes as well as softer, laid-back and introspective tracks on her debut album
The debut LP from Jessica Smyth, aka Biig Piig, comes after the artist’s 2023 mixtape Bubblegum, which gave us a selection of club-inspired pop tracks sung in a mixture of English and Spanish. 11:11 moves in a similar dance-pop direction with Favourite Girl, delivering a portrayal of the singer’s idolised status through a catchy hook and funky bassline. Other tracks like Ponytail and 4AM stick with this aesthetic and combine it with housey claps and snares. These tracks, paired with Biig Piig’s sometimes husky and sometimes delicate vocals, are very much in line with her past upbeat work.
11:11’s latter half takes a slight departure from Biig Piig’s usual sound and, whilst she is by no means a stranger to softer production, Stay Home and I Keep Losing Sleep show a more experimental side to the LP with lo-fi chanting and pitch-shifted vocals respectively. While Biig Piig clearly knows what sticks and what doesn’t in terms of easy listening, the album does demonstrate the artist’s desire to explore new sounds, but 11:11 is careful not to rock the boat, often playing it safe with the majority of its runtime.
